EMA Structures is proud to share the successful completion of a technically complex structural installation at Short’s Gardens, in the heart of London’s WC2H. This project involved the design and build of a new steel mezzanine platform integrated within an existing multi-storey void, to support a striking two-storey spiral staircase.
Scope of Works
The scope included:
Installation of a custom-designed structural steel platform.
Integration within the existing building’s basement structure.
Support for a freestanding spiral staircase linking two upper floors.
All works completed within tight spatial and logistical constraints.
Engineering & Site Challenges
The steel members were transported in spliced sections and manually lowered through the void using chain blocks anchored to existing ceiling beams. This avoided overloading existing elements and preserved architectural integrity.
Completion & Compliance
All works were reviewed post-installation and confirmed to comply with:
Structural design intent.
Eurocode loadings and serviceability limits.
Building Control regulations.
The platform was successfully integrated without overstressing existing perimeter beams, providing an elegant and functional structural solution in a confined central London site.
